Concept Sketch for Upcoming Starfucker Music Video

Concept Sketch for Starfucker’s “Medicine” from Andrew Sloan on Vimeo.

This is a quickie sketch I whipped up to outline some ideas that will form the basis for the 2nd music video created for Portland’s Starfucker. The footage was shot in my living room against a white screen (due to lack of a green screen) and the 3D was made in Maya. The final video will follow this general format; a high contrast dancer integrated into a nice 3D environment. We shoot the raw footage on monday. Stay tuned for updates and other developments.

New Music: Deerhoof – Offend Maggie

I’m so feeling Deerhoof these days. This Pitchfork performance is rad as hell. Is it just me or does Greg Saunier’s snare sound like someone opening a soda can containing all the universe’s oceans?

This weekend I met with the good old boys from local popstars Starfucker to discuss the commissioning of a brand new video, directed by yours truly. The song chosen to be videoed will appear on the band’s forthcoming, yet to be titled, EP. The material is far more dancy and calls for a different style of video all together. This round, we will be integrating live footage into the mix. I will be posting concepts and stills along the road so everyone can keep up. I’ll also get the track up when the final cut is finished. This is gonna be great.

Friends and Friends of Friends

January 12th, 2009 | Art News, Uncategorized | 0 Comments

Last week I was given (nearly) full control over the organization and creation of Tender Loving Empire’s yearly compilation “Friends and Friends of Friends” This year we will be putting out a 2-disc set with one disc consisting of bands local to Portland and the second being bands from around the country and Canada. I am in charge of choosing the artists, picking the tracks, and designing the artwork and the packaging. This compilation is pretty huge around here; many people will see/hear this record.
In addition I will be organizing the TLE Birthday Bash in May. I will be booking bands and making all the necessary arrangements. This will be the official release date for the compilation. I’m super excited to get my hands on the underbelly of two wonderful musical aspects of TLE’s and Portland’s 2009.

New Year, MGMT writes a song about my step-mother?

January 4th, 2009 | Music Reviews, Uncategorized | 4 Comments

2009 is here and I suppose it’s time to dust off the ol’ blog and pick up my posting habbits. To kick off the new year I’ll leave you all with the most wonderful coincidence that has happened upon me in ages. My step-mother, acclaimed scientific illustrator Portia Sloan, must have been googling herself one day to have stumbled across this tune. It is a rare bootleg by recently raved-about indie heartthrobs MGMT; and yes it is about my step-mom. Listen to the tune and you will see that they are describing her craft, scientific illustration. And furthermore, they even drop the name of one of her more popular reconstructions, a “four-winged dinosaur” called Microrapter. Enjoy this one… so weird.

MGMT – Portia Sloan

*UPDATE 1•20•09* My stepmother is a humble woman, but, like most of us, will google herself now and again. This was the case last month when she came across this track with no prior knowledge of MGMT existing. She sent it to me in an email laughing at the ridiculous situation that anyone would write a song about her. She was unaware that the silly kids who had written the song were in fact international indie-pop superstars. When I received the email and heard the song I was doubly flabbergasted to see that there was a song out there about my step-mom; and that it was MGMT who had recorded it. It was just absurd. So I informed her of the gravity of her stardom, told her to do a little research on MGMT so she could really see what had actually happened here. She was astounded and became immediately embarrassed when she found them at the top of most of 2008′s best of lists. This meant that tons of people had listened to her song. It has over 1000 plays on Last.fm alone. She has since dropped it and is waiting for me to write to MGMT and find out how the hell they came up with this number. When I get around to doing that I’ll be sure to post about the other side of the other side of the story.
