I hereby announce the death of my first blog, Monstrous Blog. I will no longer be posting here. Instead, my blogging efforts have moved to my main website, Monstrous Media. I've finished production on the new Starfucker video for Rawnald Gregory Erikson The Second. The video is being passed around now by the band's management to some internet music presences in hopes of getting an exclusive out of it, i.e. Pitckfork TV. I will post any info about screening times or links to it when it is released. Hurray!

Starfucker Update: 10•2•08

Today I've posted 2 clips that will actually end up in the new Starfucker video. The videos have been posted without sound because all the syncing hasn't been done yet. I am roughly 3/4 of the way finished with creating all the images and I have the rest sketched and plotted out. The video is scheduled to be released mid-October alongside the band's CMJ performances.

Progress is moving swiftly on this project. I have roughly half of the moving images completed and a ton of ideas to flesh out. I am posting 4 stills from different "worlds" I have been creating for the video. The colors and minor details are not final but it should give you a better idea of where I'm going with this. Each world unfolds into the next in a complex non-sensical voyage through this wonderland. I've also posted the track that the video will be for, 'Rawnald Gregory Erickson The Second'. Please feel free to comment, critique, request, etc.

This week I got the green light on the production for the proposed music video for Starfucker's Rawnald Gregory Erickson The Second. I will be posting updates along the way to keep all involved, or those who may be interested in the progress, informed.
This first post is the "sketch" I delivered as a basis for some ideas and color schemes I intend to use in the video.

The rumors are true. I've been in contact with both of Montreal and Polyvinyl Records organizing a secret listening party for Portland's ears only. We will preview the entire new record, Skeletal Lamping, in a public venue yet to be announced on a date in the near future. I will keep you all posted with all important updates as they come in. This post is dedicated entirely to the support of a band that I feel very strongly about. Starfucker is a synth-driven pop act with simple but perfectly elegant songs that wont leave your head for days. Local to Portland, Starfucker originally attracted me about a year ago when I saw then accidentally among a bill jam-packed with other locals. They were smothered somewhere far down in the line-up yet they completely stood out as something worth paying attention to. I saw them play numerous times through out the course of this last year and watched them progress to a point of near stardom in the local scene. Now, with their new LP complete, they are getting ready to blow up. Really, this band's gonna be huge. I was fortunate enough to come across an advance copy of their full-length that is set to be released in September. I share it now only to do this band a service. I hope my friends on the east coast and others all over the world can hear this and in turn give back to the band that deserves it when they come through your town, cause I have no doubt they will. Good work Starfucker, you deserve it. Cheers and happy listening.

Newspapers - Eagle + Snake

I announce today the completion and release of The Newspapers' latest release, Eagle and Snake. The Newspapers are a band local to Portland and close personal friends of mine. They commissioned me to do the album art and website design for this release. I am proud to say that all aspects of this project are completed. These guys worked very hard on this project and did and exceptional job putting together a wonderful EP using grassroots methods. The album is available for free download at www.eagleandsnake.com. You can check out info about the band and upcoming shows on their myspace, www.myspace.com/thenewspapers. There will be a CD release party tonight at Satyricon featuring a 4 band bill, with the Newspapers headlining. You can pick up a copy of the hand screened cd at any of their live shows or contacting them through myspace. Give the album a listen and tell us all what you think, in some form or another. Hurray!

M.I.A.L.I.

Over the span of my listening career I have found it difficult to delve into the world of hip hop/rap. Not that I haven't been intrigued or even tempted, it's just that the hook never quite caught this fish. It took some impeccable tunes to finally pull me into the dark side (no pun) but alas, I have arrived. M.I.A.'s "Kala" is a knock out. The music assembled here is like none other; combining traditional hip hop with crunk and a whole pile of world music. Her samples are unique and rightly used. Like most hip hop it took me a few listens to get into but now stands as a staple in my listening regiment. Hats off to M.I.A. This post is for you, Ali, as I have often imagined you dancing and screaming to these tracks.

There are certain points, periodically, in the progression of modern music that a band succeeds in creating something unique. In this day and age it grows increasingly more difficult to be unique, what with every Joe Schlomo picking up an old sequencer and plugging it in to make some hip retro noise. If any of you out there have any interest in seeing a truly spectacular live performance that stands out as an example of just this: a creative means to producing a perfectly danceable progressive electro-drone rock end, go see Holy Fuck play. They rule. They're playing in Portland for the 3rd time in 5 months on the 27th of this month if anyone wants to meet me at the show. If you cant make the show then here's the album to hold you over.

...just a few more albums that have taken me back recently.

Radical Face - Ghost - JESSICA, I PUT THIS UP SPECIFICALLY AND ONLY FOR YOU. Radical Face has been my favorite headphones listening experience since Do Make Say Think. Completely different bands but similar visceral experience. Soft, folky tunes will slosh you around like you were sailing on an old boat through the melting ice caps of the arctic.

MGMT - Oracular Spectaculr - Hell yeah MGMT. This album rules the electro-pop school with some nice variation in song styles; not necessarily all dance tracks. Good stories in the lyrics. Every time I hear this album I like it a little more.

Here are a couple albums that I've been listening too and taken the time to make .zips out of. They are each up there for different people specifically but anyone can and should take them. They are all good for different reasons.

Ratatat - These are the two full length Ratatat albums I have for you Brad. Thanks for your wise internet advice. I love you.
...and the Remixes Vol. 1

O'Death - Head Home - This is the CD I tried to get for you Jon Jon. This is O'Death's only studio album as far as I know. I just got it and I'm pretty stoked on it. It's a rock infused bluegrass band with some wild wailing vocals. Great live show. Check it out.

Tropicália - A Revolution In Brazilian Music -Brazillian psychedelic rock from 1968. This is for Brandy and Jon. This is what we listened to in Richmond, Brandy. Some of the best music I've ever heard in my LIFE. Dig it. Love you guys.

The Dirty Projectors - Rise Above - Just a really unique listen. This band is doing some great things. Nick, you should check this out.

Radiohead - In Rainbows - One of the best new albums I've heard in a LONG time. Magical, if you don't have this yet, now's your chance.

King Crimson - The ConstruKtion of Light -King Crimson totally rips on this 70's gem. Listen all the way through. Another unique crazy good band.
