I know this guy who told me about this guy who just bought a laser cutter. He makes custom iPhone backings out of tiny-thin strips of walnut wood. I sent him and image I whipped up and BLAM; look at me now. Look at the detail on those cheeks! Shit’s hot. Check out the services of iBackwoods here

Then I blogged about it.

Dodeca-Disco

Had a great time constructing a geo-masterpiece this week. It’s the dodeca-disco ball that garnished the ballroom at the Woods in southeast Portland for Tender Loving Empire’s Winter Formal.

Made out of cardboard and Y La Bamba CDs, hopefully this perfect platonic solid will mesmerize all who view her for years to come.

Look at her shine!

I love my job…

ONUINU Video Shoot

November 20th, 2010 | Art News | 3 Comments

Had a shoot for the Onuinu music video today. It went extremely well. We had 6 choreographed dancers, 3 cameras on the ground and one suspended in the air by balloons. The weather broke just in time to give us some sun and a rain-free afternoon. Thank you so much to Jin Camou for collecting and organizing her amazing dancers, Matthew Ross for speeding over after work to contribute his expertise, Daniel Sloan for convincing me to buy a nice camera to capture such a rare opportunity and for exerting his impeccable wide-angle skills on us, and Joe Holliday for being the brains behinds every good idea Portland has seen in the last 3 years. Here are a few stills.

Yeah Great Art

Yeah Great Fine Album Art
Just finishing up the album art for the new, self titled, Yeah Great Fine record. We went pretty simple here, kept to the geometric trends of the times but kept it light and popping. I used some texture shots of tiles in the Auckland Airport in New Zealand for the gridded mountain scape.
And here’s the reverse:

And here’s the shirt design I think we’re gonna go with.

Please listen to them and if you’re on the west coast catch them on tour next month.

What’s Going On?

August 7th, 2010 | Art News | 1 Comment

Hi Everyone.

Oi, it’s been ages since my last post. This, I know. The past 40 days have been a mental/social whirlwind since landing back in the United States and proceeding to re-establish myself in Portland again.

Here’s what’s going on:

I now work at a wonderful record label/local art proprietor/screen-printing enterprise called Tender Loving Empire in downtown Portland. Learn about us here.

I recently finished my third music video which will be self released in the coming month or so. I created it to be viewed in 3D. Like, with glasses. More info on all that soon.

I have a whole queue of music reviews I will be rolling out as soon as I find the time.

I’ll be doing the art for the up-and-coming Yeah Great Fine record. I’m super excited about this band and this record. They’ve out done themselves this time and are destine for great heights.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be setting up my screen printing studio out of which I will be teaching small classes. More on that soon, too.

I’ll be working on a revamp of this website that should be done sometime in the fall. I’m trying to re-focus my portfolio and streamline things a bit more.

I’m looking forward to making a lot of music in the coming months. Therefore, I’m actually looking forward to winter this year.

All in all I’m pretty good. Adjusting to the US has been harder than I thought it would be. After I kick this bronchitis I should be just rolling right along. Thanks for keeping up with me and stay tuned for some new content.

Hope you’re all well.
Andrew.

Art is Hard: Nicola Van Weersel

May 16th, 2010 | Art News | 0 Comments

This week I’ve had the pleasure of spending a healthy amount of time with one of Wellington’s secret magical art jewels. Nicola Van Weersel, a local creative maven, is bursting at the seems with the kind of art stuff that every cultured city desires and only the finest humans possess. Ever since she acknowledged the disturbing absence of carelessness in her world Van Weersel has been on a one-woman quest to revive the inner child in all of us.

This crusade began nearly two years ago when she began making stuffed toys in a recurring patterned theme. Since, her rats have become increasingly larger and exponentially more psychedelic. She uses a range of materials, dyes, and accessories to make each toy unique in its own right.

Along with her sewing machine Nicola also dons a frequent brush. Her paintings are like epic scenes of creation acted out by single-celled microorganisms and looked at through a saturation filter. They tell stories of a non-descript and incomprehensible nature. Much like her toys, her paintings leave much to the imagination, again begging out the inner children within us.

TLE 2.0

April 29th, 2010 | Art News | 0 Comments

Things have been heating up on the homefront recently and I sure as hell can feel the heat from here (‘here’ being New Zealand the ‘homefront’ being Portland, OR). See, Portland’s beloved culture perpetuators, Tender Loving Empire, is about to grow up. They’ve recently gotten ahold of a new space into which they plan to move their headquarters. The new space, I’m told, is far larger and allows for much more physical growth as well as productive growth. There will be a new gallery space, a place for live performances, all the goodies of the old NW shop, and more smiles than you can fit in a school bus. Actually, the changes are insurmountable and will surely aid the inevitable world domination for which TLE has plans.

This is a shot of the new storefront located right in Portland’s sweet spot, 412 SW 10th Avenue, super close to Powell’s and all that downtowny goodness. I love the design on this poster.

The above video features all the artists who’re contributing to the murals that will appear on the interior of the new space. There is so much talent gushing out of this video and onto the walls… can’t wait til it’s done.

And lastly here’s a flyer I just made showcase the 3rd annual TLE birthday party. This show, in the past, has consistently been one of the best shows of the each year since it’s inception. For those of you around, be sure to check it out and celebrate how far this tiny operation has come.

Keep an eye out for TLE in the coming years, dudes. We’re gonna be huge.
