When It Rains it Pours

Leif Podhajsky’s Portfolio
The artwork of Leif Podhajsky is becoming a huge influence in the new Nurses music video I’ve been working on. Give it a look.

It’s been raining in Wellington for about 3 weeks straight and I have to say, I haven’t one complaint about it. At the same time that I slowed my pace and stopped in Wellington all of my lingering and supposed/proposed projects came to a head. Production on the Nurses vid started, Andrew from the Chairy Arms asked me to start working on his album art, my dad bought a domain name and has asked me to design his new website, and FWS4 and I are trying to release our all-ukulele Beatles cover album in the next few months (not to mention I should be writing/recording Royal’s breakout release). However, the timing for all this really couldn’t be any more perfect; I have a comfortable place to crank out my work, and I’m not even tempted to go outside because the weather has been complete shit. Thus, a more fitting statement couldn’t be conjured: “When it rains, it pours, motherfucker.”

Chairy

This is a proposed album cover for the new Chairy Arms EP, Amber Street Lights.

Here’s a link to my Dad’s new website Science Visualization, still obviously under construction. He will be using it to showcase critiques and gallerys of outstanding images of scientific subjects alongside a portfolio archive of some of his own work.

These are images from an incredible photo blog called THEM THANGS run by Justin Blyth. It essentially emulates exactly what I wish my life looked like. Have a good long look. It’s incredible.

I’m really into retro shots of hot babes. This New York photographer Marley Kate does and excellent at just that. Awesome work.

ok, that’s all for now. Hunker down and hope for rain.

Just playin around. It was an attempt at faking decent Global Illumination but it is apparent my lighting strategies need fine-tuning. Not sure what to do with this..

My New Motion Reel – 2009

August 3rd, 2009 | Art News, Uncategorized | 2 Comments

In an effort to try to stay as productive as possible whilst overseas, I’ve whipped up an updated demo reel for the year 2009. It is a ‘best-of’ all of the content I created since my last reel, ready to be tossed at anyone who might be interested. Have a look, let me know what you think.

Stereoscopic Forrest

Another more successful attempt at the stereogif technique. This series of photos was taken at Powell Butte yesterday afternoon. I didn’t use a tripod or anything for this one and I think it shows. It will continue to be possible to shoot still subjects with relative ease but with just one lens I wont be able to sterogif-ize moving subjects like the rad shot from the live show below.

Kinda Bored But Feeling Inspired

After a super successful benefit show I finally have my computer back. The Universe is back in order. All is well. Animated GIFs are awesome.

Thanks to Justin for this one. Id like to make a more successful stereogif in the future.

New Music from ME: Royal

May 30th, 2009 | Art News, Music Reviews, Uncategorized | 0 Comments

I woke up yesterday with a full song in my head. This is a ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH demo of the basic idea laid out. I need to find a way to make more substantial beats. Drumming on the back of my guitar wont cut it anymore.

In other news, I just got a ukulele! My good bud Cory Mack passed along his old one so I’d have and instrument to travel with. What a guy. No uke on the following track, however.

Royal – Doit Forme

Tender Loving Empire Comp Release Recap!

May 27th, 2009 | Art News, Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I know it’s been some time now but I wanted to let all of my devoted readers in on the full goings-on that went down last Saturday at the Tender Loving Empire Compilation Release Party/Second Birthday Party. The night went over very well with yours truly, as the host for the evening, making everything go as smoothly as possible, organizing the live art, and giving away all kinds of goodies.

Reporter opened the set powerfully with their own brand of energetic late 80′s punk influenced dance-rock. It was still a bit early, with their set opening at 6:30 but someone had to start the party. Reporter certainly stepped up to the challenge and delivered.

Next up was Gratitilluim. These guys are fresh; they play psychedelic folk rock about animals. A lively set kept the crowd involved and they satisfied my personal urges to hear their track that appears on the TLE Comp, “Monkey Play”.

I had arranged for there to be live screen printing demos going on throughout the night. The only catch was that participants had to provide their own items to be printed on, i.e. take of their shirts. This was a huge success throughout the night with something like 50 prints pulled.

Super XX man wooed the crowd with his musically therapeutic tunes. The bass player’s bass was a bit out out of tune for the majority of their set but it didn’t seem to bother anyone.

These guys are tards.

After a round of give-aways, jokes, and sing-alongs, World’s Greatest Ghosts took the stage. These guys were GREAT. Despite the generally bad sound that Backspace (the venue) provides, the levels were balanced and they rocked out. World’s Greatest Ghosts plays an up-beat variety of rock often sprinkled with synths and harmonies; right up my alley..

The one man band, Boy Eats Drum Machine, never ceases to amaze me. His live performance consists of just him, cutting live samples straight off of vinyl, whilst simultaneously playing saxophone and singing all the hooks. He is capable of building his songs right there on stage, complete with tv monitors showing the audience his hands as he crafts. The outcome is soulful, beat-oriented, experimental dance music; good stuff.

Next up was Mr. Jared Mees himself with all his Grown Children. Jared gave a stellar performances, as usual, fueling the fire as the birthday party went into the night. I was drawing on stage during this set so my memory of it is a bit blurred. I was using the energy from stage and putting it right onto the page, I think I blacked out.

Mega*Church closed the show, as it could not have happened any other way. Their set was the most perfect culmination of everything; the evening, the nusto week organizing everything with the party, and the last few months putting the Comp together that made all this possible. I was elated. They speak to the crowd as if you are attending a motivational speaking ceremony, or more appropriately, a church service. They place dance music but it’s not just drum and bass: it carries with it a positive, unifying message. It left everyone feeling content, satisfied and sweaty. Thank you Mega*Church.

And that about does it for my recap of the night. If you want to see more photos check out the full photo stream here.
